Shiatsu

Shiatsu translates as ‘finger pressure’. It is an ancient treatment originating in China and Japan. It is akin to acupuncture but instead of needles it uses fingers, hands, palms, knees and elbows to manipulate the energy in the pathways known as ‘meridians’.

Treatments generally take place on a floor-level futon, where the client remains fully clothed. Where this is not possible, the treatment can be very effectively adjusted to the client’s abilities.

Many people feel ‘out of balance’ or ‘not right’ but because they have no symptoms recognisable to western medicine they cannot be easily helped. Oriental medicine is based on energy systems, therefore it recognises ‘imbalances’, which would manifest as ‘diseases’ if left to develop and become more entrenched. Shiatsu effects change in the overall energy system. Like other complementary therapies, it supports the body’s own natural healing capacity and the unity of body, mind and spirit is integral in it.

As well as experiencing relief from symptoms, clients may feel relaxed and at peace after a treatment.

Loose, comfortable clothing is required to facilitate contact and movement.

Recent research carried out by the University of Leeds in three countries (Austria, Spain, UK) established that Shiatsu treatment:improves health and well beingis safecan benefit specific conditionssuggests a role for Shiatsu in Public Health
